Kareena Pamani

Kareena is a currently a master’s student in the International Educational Development Program at the Graduate School of Education at University of Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to Penn, she taught at various schools in New York City. Teaching at these schools and seeing the disparities in quality and resources available to students based on their home zip code made her interested in advocacy efforts. Kareena has taught about social justice within her classroom roles and aims to continue fighting for equity of marginalized voices and people.

In Class to Incarceration: Re-Imagining the School to Prison Pipeline

Opinion

What is the school to prison pipeline? How do zero tolerance policies perpetuate this? How can we as morally bound humans, do our part in recognizing these injustices, as well as start to correct them?

As a former (and future teacher), these questions have long floated around in my head. Although some may not recognize or be aware of a school to prison pipeline, the existence and perpetuation of this pipeline is ever apparent to me.
