LaShawnda Brooks — Activism Beyond the Classroom

LaShawnda earned her M.S.Ed. from Penn GSE’s Education Policy Program, where she also worked as research assistant for the Racial Empowerment Collaborative. A first generation graduate of the University of Virginia, prior to Penn, LaShanda, serving for two years of Teach for America in Atlanta. Most recently, as an instructional coach for City Year, she designed, developed, and implemented curriculum for 250 AmeriCorps members in New York City.

She also has served as a program manager at America Needs You, where she oversaw a college persistence and career development mentoring program for first generation college students. Her collaborative work resulted in 98 percent program completion and 100 percent college graduation. She now serves as executive director at Philips Andover Academy’s Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers.

Texas' Contested History: The Politics of Curriculum Policy

In Texas, the fight over history is real and is happening in our school boards. Republicans have stacked school boards with creationist and others who have fought over standards, and the content taught in our schools. As Texas is the largest buyer of textbooks, the policies they set affect textbooks all across the country. The result? History isn’t solely factual, the telling of particular histories implicitly affect the abilities of our society to resist oppression.
